Lambs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Our ownership was May 1st, and I have not been feeding our lambs showbloom! from the start. I started a few of my lambs on showbloom! to help them put on some weight. We weighed six lambs and they ranged from 71 to 86 pounds. Can I start the others on the showbloom! and keep them from getting them too fat? I am feeding Purina Grower Finisher which is 17.5 percent protein and 3 percent crude fat. If I can start the others on showbloom!, what do you recommend for the feeding ration? The bigger lambs are getting about 3.6 pounds per day of feed and the smaller ones are getting 3 ounces of the showbloom! and 3 pounds of feed per day.

A: I suggest you put the heavier lambs on a finishing feed and top dress showbloom! for additional muscle and appetite enhancement. If you have scales, weigh you lambs periodically. You might also want to see if the smaller lambs will consume a little more showbloom! with their feed. showbloom! will develop muscle, not fat. We have breeders feeding as much as 1 pound per head per day to smaller lambs to catch up; they do just fine.

Q: We just bought a whether lamb for our county show in April. He is 7 to 8 weeks old. A breeder recommended that we feed a good Bermuda hay free choice and 1 pound of showbloom! a day for a month or two before backing down to the typical amount of 3 to 4 ounces per day plus a good textured feed. Is there any problem with feeding this much showbloom! for a couple of months? Will this much help more than the recommended 3 to 4 ounces? Is there any harm in feeding this much, i.e. copper, etc.?

A: Copper is not an issue with showbloom!, regardless how much you feed. If you feed showbloom! the entire time you have the animal, the recommended amount will get the job done. Some breeders wait too long before they start feeding showbloom! and then double up on the amount for a short period. If you feed the heavier amount, watch the stool to make sure it's not too loose. showbloom! will indeed increase muscle and enhance feed intake.
